Learn how to make money from buying and selling shares on the J.S.E.

Stock market trading is simple but that doesn't mean it's easy! Let me explain. Most people can handle a dummy portfolio with 1000's of dollars or rands worth of funds. They trade like there's no tomorrow and generally they end up profitable. The next logical step is to open a real account with REAL MONEY in it! What happens next is the quintessential challenge around trading for 95% of people: They lose money!

Why make money stock market trading with a dummy account and then lose it with a Real Account? Our experience with stock market courses is that learners are able to operate under no stress with a dummy account. They are making trading decisions based purely on the stock market analysis using technical charts, fundamentals and choosing a trading strategy. The moment they put REAL MONEY on the table, the trading psychology enters the fray.

What is trading psychology? It is the mental discipline, the very framework around your beliefs about money and emotional attachment to it. At least 90% of the money lost in the stock market is due to this factor: Trading Psychology. Many people succumb to their fears regarding money or the loss of money when they start trading stock markets! The challenge is arming the stock market trader with aids to cure the 5 fears of trading. Find out more...

Our Stock Market Outlook March 2009 - The Bottom of the Recession

We provide a stock market outlook in a weekly newsletter to investment club members. In March 2009, we published an issue stating that the bottom of the stock market was reached and that the stock markets will start recovering. We stated a number of reasons for this view on the markets, as to how we drew this conclusion. Since then the global stock markets are up between 30-50% from the lows in March 2009!

See our quick performance review section for some our more recent stock market calls. This is a summary of our investment club newsletter outlook. To find out more, visit our Wealth Club section.

What can you trade?

Single stock futures or SSFs are geared contracts that make up lots of 100 shares. The gearing is usually between 5 to 8 times normal. This simply means that you dont have to put all of your money down when buying the contracts in a share. There are limited number of single stock future contract available on the market as market makers only list those shares filtered by volume and volatility. Generally there are about 150 shares that have Single stock future contracts available to trade.

SSFs expire every quarter and can be rolled over for a fee by your broker. They are also subject to costs that CFDs are not. They include any dividend payment expected in the cost of the contract. But you do not enjoy receiving the dividend while holding the SSF.

CFDs or Contracts For Difference are geared contracts that are also based in number of shares however the gearing is higher than SSFs. CFDs do not expire so you can hold them indefinitely. Depending on the position you have, either long or short, you can receive or be charged interest as well as dividend payments on the underlying share you've traded.

Spreads or spread trading is simply a trade based on the expectation of the price moving in a certain direction. If you believe the price is going to go up then you would buy a spread contract on the share. For every cent the share price moves up you make R1 per contract. If it moves down you lose R1 for every cent it goes lower. The gearing here is also high.

Short term trading courses!

August 2013

The definition of a short term trader in our view is someone that can dedicate at least 2 hours a day to analysing the stock market and other charts using advanced technical analysis. See below for a full set of criteria.

Criteria:

  • TIME: At least 1-2 hours of technical analysis a day
  • Capital base available for portfolio (Suggest R100 000)
  • Alternate form of income (while you build portfolio)
  • At least 2 years of investment experience
  • Sophisticated charting software
  • Use of Skype
  • Good record keeping
  • Mental discipline

Our short term trading course includes includes fundamental, technical and psychological aspects of how to make money from taking short term trades on the stock market. We define short term as 24 hours to 31 days. Intraday trading is highly specialised and should be the final frontier for the stock market trader. We do offer a mentorship programme which includes the ALSI trading that includes, at times, intraday trading however this is a very time consuming way to earn money on the stock market.

How much money can you make?

How long is a piece of string... This question can only be determined once a few questions are answered honestly. What are some of the questions then?

  1. What capital do you have to start?
  2. What time do you have to dedicate to trading?
  3. What instrument do you prefer trading?
  4. What is your risk profile?
  5. How often do you want to short term trade?
  6. What are your expectations?
  7. Do you have alternate income streams?

In general, on a portfolio of R100 000 used for short term trading you can expect to achieve a monthly return of R5000 - R10 000 on average. Some months may be negative and some months will be fantastic. This is the way it works with short term trading. So, how long is a piece of string? On an average of R5000 a month after costs, this results in R60 000 profit over 12 months and 60% return on your initial capital.

What is the short term trading plan?

In the Short Term Trading mentorship programme we assess our candidates during an interview and also discuss our overall short term trading plan involving 24 months of trading.

The main focus is on how to take the initial capital and building the trading positions with a low risk to reward ratio. At any one time only 50% of your portfolio should be used to take short term trades. At the same time, a maximum of R10 000 should be used in a single short term trade whatever the trade using single stock futures or other geared instrument. Wherever possible a portfolio risk of no more than 2% should be applied to any trade. On R100 000 this equals a stop of R2000 before costs.

Within the first quarter of short term trading & as part of our mentorship programme, the goal is to cover the fee of our programme plus. In this period you would look to open a maximum of 4 short term trading positions at the same time.

In the 2nd quarter, you would focus on making money of R5000 per month after brokering costs. This provides you with trading capital derived from profits. Essentially, you get to add one more trading position from your profits.

By the third quarter, you should have an estimated R20 000 of profit in your account. This allows you to start trading one contract on the ALSI top 40 plus the 4 single stock futures positions. Now we can add an additional R5000 profits per month.

The fourth quarter brings us to the close of the year and you could be sitting on profits of about R50 000. At this time, you are mostly trading with profits in your account and could withdraw some of your original capital invested. In addition you could add another ALSI Top 40 contract to your short term trading arsenal. This additional contract potentially adds another R5000 per month to your profits.

In summary, at the end of 12 months, you could have an earning potential of R5 000 from the single stock futures & an estimated earning of R10 000 from the two ALSI top 40 contracts! What are your expectations?

The next 12 months become exponentially profitable. However, to learn more you would need to come on the Short Term Trading Mentorship programme.

Trading Room

ALSI trading is also a contract based on the ALSI top 40 index and every point the index moves in your favour, be it either up or down, you make R10 per contract. There are mixed margin requirements depending on your choice of broker. Each broker will require that you provide refundable deposit or margin in order to take a short term trade. Generally, it works out to 1% of the index value. If the index is at 24000 points then the value of the index per contract is 24 000 x R10 = R240 000. This would suggest a minimum margin of R24 000 per contract. You would need at least R24 000 in your account to take the trade and buffer for cash flow as the index moves around.

ALSI Apprentice runs again in Sept 2013! Register for 2nd Sept to get involved in ALSI Trading course and ALSI trading room.

There are also warrants, options and bonds however we prefer not to cover these in our course at present. They actually make subject matter for another course altogether. As a matter of interest, it is also possible to trade the weather, pork bellies, insurance and credit amongst other things.

Forex trading is the last resort for short term traders. Many people like to try this form of trading first. It takes discipline and much experience to be profitable when trading forex. The gearing can be up to 400 times which means losing your money really quickly with only a few trades if you are not careful. Currency trading courses are available on request from an associate company. Enquire by contacting us at info @wealthskills.co.za with subject: Forex course.
